Elizabeth Ellen Marlow was born in 1889 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw hat sewer named Phillis Jane Marlow. Elizabeth's birth was registered as "Elizabeth Ellen M. Marlow". It is quite likely that the 'M' stands for Marshall, although the birth certificate would have to be obtained to confirm that. Phillis married a Joseph Marshall less than a year after Elizabeth's birth, so there is a good chance that Joseph was Elizabeth's father.

Elizabeth appears in the 1891 and 1901 censuses living with her maternal grandparents and next door to her parents, on Cromwell Road in Luton. Joseph Marshall died in 1910. In the 1911 census, Elizabeth appears with her mother and siblings at 46 Vernon Road in Luton, and working as a milliner. She has yet to be researched after 1911.
