Childhood
Phillis Jane Marlow was born in August 1869 in the parish of Sundon in Bedfordshire, daughter of a plaiter called Elizabeth Marlow, formerly Hack, and her husband John Marlow, an agricultural labourer. Phillis appears in the 1871 census living with her parents at Upper Sundon. She was baptised in 1878, when she was nine years old. The 1881 census still finds her living with her parents and siblings in the parish of Sundon, although the census that year does not record whether they were living at Upper Sundon or Lower Sundon.
Adulthood
When she was about twenty years old, Phillis had a daughter, Elizabeth Ellen. It seems quite likely that Elizabeth's father was Joseph Marshall, who Phillis married less than a year later. The 1891 census finds Phillis and Joseph living at 9 Cromwell Road in Luton, the town immediately south of Sundon, with Phillis's parents living next door at 11 Cromwell Road. Phillis was working as a straw hat sewer, whilst Joseph was a straw hat blocker. The situation in 1901 was very similar. Joseph and Phillis were living at 47 Cromwell Road, whilst her parents were again next door at 49 Cromwell Road. The 1901 census gives her name as Jane, suggesting she may have been known by her middle name.
Joseph and Phillis had ten children together in total between 1889 and 1910. Joseph died in 1910 when he was only 41. They had been married about twenty years. Phillis's youngest child, George, died at about the same time, aged eighteen months.
Phillis appears in the 1911 census with her nine surviving children living at 46 Vernon Road in Luton. She outlived Joseph by over forty years but never remarried.
At the outbreak of the Second World War, Phillis was living with her daughter Edith at 51 St Monica's Avenue in Luton. Phillis died there on 19th October 1950, aged 81.
