Edith Norah Marshall was born in 1904 at Luton in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw hat sewer named Phillis Jane Marshall, formerly Marlow, and her husband Joseph Marshall, a straw hat blocker. When Edith was about six years old her father Joseph died. The 1911 census finds Edith living with her widowed mother at 46 Vernon Road in Luton.

In 1925, aged 21, Edith married Charles Cain. They appear to have had one daughter. Edith died in 1968, aged 64.
