From Memorial & Family History of Erie County, NY, F127, E6, M4, Vol. 2, page 95:
- "Philip Betz, father of John Casper Betz, native of Germany, belonging to a family which had resided in Bavaria for many generations. Came to Buffalo in 1837 when a lad of ten years. He learned the trade of stationary engineer and was engineer for Jewett & Root for 25 years. Later, he became engineer for the Buffalo Fire Department. In 1858, he married Hannah Schlotzer. She was born near Hamburg, Erie County, in 1830. Philip Betz died in 1892, (was a resident of Buffalo in 1906-1908)."
[From George Richmond, grichmon AT localnet.com:]
- A stationary engineer was a man who cared for the boilers and steam engines at a factory or other building. He was typically responsible for fueling the boilers, tending the water level, oiling and maintaining the machinery, etc. The job was much like that of an engineer on a steam ship, except he stayed in one place, hence "stationary" engineer. This was a very skilled occupation, because the safety of those in the building depended upon the stationary engineer.
