Cause: Chronic myocarditis with dilitations and bronchial asthma; Contributory: general arteriosclerosis and alcoholism. |
A preponderance of circumstantial evidence leads me to believe that the Charles Betz who marries Mary Ann Davern is the son of Philip Betz and Johanna Schlotzer:
1. One Charles Betz, d. 1907, is buried at Forest Lawn with Philip Betz and Johanna Schlotzer Betz. His tombstone indicates "husband" implying that his wife died after him. (She is not buried there. Mary Ann Davern was Catholic.)
2. One Mary Betz is found widowed in the 1910 census on Eagle Street with children Clara, Mabel and John, children we know she had with Charles per the 1900 census.
3. Chas. Betts [son of Carl/Charles Betz] of Wakefield Drive is found in the address book of William Clabeau who we know was raised by Philip Betz' daughter Johanna Betz Clabeaux. Also in this address book is a reference to Jennie Betz, the nun, associated with Chas. Betts. Charles and Jennie were children of Charles Betz and Mary Davern.
4. The 1920 census finds Charles Betts (Charles Betz's son) on Wakefield drive, married to Margaret with several daughters, including the grandmother of Dan Conlin. We know that this Charles Betts was son of Charles Betz and Mary Davern from Dan.
5. Charles Betz and Mary Ann Davern baptized their children as: Johanna (name of Charles' mother), Philip (name of Charles' father) and Charles. A later child was named Clara: Charles had a sister named Clara who died as an infant.
6. While Charles Betz is found with parents Philip and Johanna in 1860 and 1870 censuses (a moulder in 1870), he is not with them in the 1880 census; however, there is (at 184 Walnut) a Charles Betts, 29, b. NY, fb Germany, mb NY (matches Philip and Johanna), *moulder,* married to Maria, b. NY of Irish parents, with daughter Jennie, 4 months. This later couple is Charles Betz and Mary Ann Davern.
7. There is no other Charles Betz/Betts of this age in Buffalo who is an appropriate contemporary of Charles b 1852 son of Philip and Johanna Bet
Between 1880 and 1890, Charles' occupation changes from moulder to tallyman. [Did this have anything to do with the alcoholism [(duration) years] noted on his death certificate?]
