1870 census: Davern, John, 55, b. IREL, 8th ward, series M593, Roll 934; page 332A Mary, wife, 51 John, 17 Ellen, 14 David, 12

Mary's not in the above family but can be found: Davern, Mary, 21, b NY, 10-WD BUFFALO, Series: M593, Roll: 935, Part: 1, Page: 535A

Per Mary's listing in 1880 census, her parents were from Ireland.

1880 Census. Daverns in Erie County are:

John Davern, 70, b. Ireland, a laborer Mary Davern, 62, b. Ireland, his wife David Davern, 22, b. NY

Ellen has moved out and can be found, age 23, b. NY, serving as a domestic servant to the McGlashan family.

Anyway, this John & Mary Davern are likely candidates for Mary's parents. While brother David was born in NY, Mary would be an older sister (named after her mother...) and quite possibly born in Ireland (around 1850), coming over as a child, then having other siblings born after their arrival.

We need to find out what church Mary and Charles were married in around 1879. If Aunt Maude could help us there... that would be GREAT!

In the 1890 city directory there are a number of DAVERNs, mostly living at 230 Fifth Street: Daniel Davern, blacksmith, 230 Fifth Daniel W. Davern, engineer, 230 Fifth David Davern, stonemason (at 238 Fifth) John Davern, laborer (r. 238 Fifth) John J. Davern, molder (58 Efner) John P. Davern, works at MH Birge & Sons, at 230 Fifth
