Shows up in 1850 Buffalo Census, age 19, living in Ward 2 (per Sharon Centanne July 1999 email to Jillaine Smith). This would be right before she marries Carl/Charles Schmidt/Smith. Jillaine now has photocopy of this census record. But is this the right Margaret Betz? Yes: Jillaine Smith found her tombstone, with her name as "Margaret Smith," at Forest Lawn Cemetery, with that of her husband, "Charles Smith". She and her husband share a same cemetery plot with Phillip Betz and his wife Johanna (Hanna) Schlotzer.
In an 1888 deposition (appeal for pension), she refers to a step-brother, Peter Cook, on Seneca Drive. This is actually the step-brother of her husband (see notes for Charles Schmidt's father).
