Maude May was born on 10th December 1867 at Plymouth in Devon, daughter of Ann May, formerly Hutchings, and her husband William May, a publican and grocer. The family lived at 29 James Street, which was the Portland Inn. Maude appears there in the 1871 census living with her parents and siblings. Some time between 1871 and 1881 the family moved just around the corner to 10 John Street. Both Maude's widowed grandfathers came to live with the family at 10 John Street during her childhood; her maternal grandfather Edmund Hutchings appears in the 1881 census living with the family, whilst her paternal grandfather William May died at 10 John Street in 1890.
On 2nd November 1890, aged 22, Maude was married to a seaman named Edward Thomas John Turner. It was a double wedding with her sister Elizabeth, who married Edward's brother William in the same church on the same day. Maude and Edward's children were therefore 'double cousins' with Elizabeth and William's children.
The 1891 census finds Maude and Edward living at 12 Cecil Street in Plymouth, where they lived in one room. Shortly after the 1891 census they had a son, Edmund Hutchings Turner. He was named after Maude's maternal grandfather, who died later in 1891. They then had a daughter named Dorothy Maude in 1892, but sadly she died aged just one year old in 1893. Maude and Edward's next sighting is in 1898, by which time they had left England altogether and were living in Ireland. Edward was now working as a coastguard and he appears to have been based at several different coastguard stations along the south coast of Ireland. In 1898 they had a daughter Gladys May Turner born at Bunmahon in County Waterford. The 1901 census finds the family living at Downeen near Rosscarbery in County Cork. In 1903 they had a daughter Anne Louisa Kate Turner born at Castletownbere in County Cork.
Some time between 1903 and 1909 the family returned to England, were they had a daughter Lilian Maureen Turner born in 1909 at St Just in Penwith, Cornwall. The 1911 census finds the family living at the Coast Guard Station at St Just in Penwith. The 1911 census also tells us that they had had six children, but that two had died. The identity of the sixth child has yet to be established.
By 1919 the family was back in Plymouth. Maude's daughter Gladys was married in 1919 in Plymouth and Maude's first grandchild was born later that year. In 1921 Maude's son Edmund was married too, and another grandchild followed in 1924.
Edward died in Plymouth in 1928, aged 62. At the time of his death his address was given as 38 Quarry Park Road, Peverell, Plymouth. After his death Maude moved to 7 Segrave Road in the Milehouse area of Plymouth. Maude's eldest son Edmund died in 1932, aged 42. Her daughter Anne never married and stayed in the Plymouth area. Maude's daughter Gladys and her family moved to Weymouth in Dorset. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Maude was living with her daughters Anne and Lilian at 7 Segrave Road. In 1941 Maude went to stay with her daughter Gladys; quite likely to escape the blitz of Plymouth which was ongoing. Maude died whilst staying in Weymouth, on 17th June 1941. She was 73 years old.
