Kate May was born on 12th January 1863 at Devonport in Devon. She was the daughter of Ann May, formerly Hutchings, and her husband William May, a publican. The family lived at 30 Pembroke Street in Devonport. Shortly after her birth the family moved to nearby Plymouth.

At the time of the 1871 census Kate was living with her maternal grandparents at Broadwindsor in Dorset, whilst her parents and siblings were living at 29 James Street in Plymouth. Kate returned to Plymouth, but sadly died as a teenager in 1877, aged 14.
