Elizabeth Mary May was born on 15th January 1870 at Plymouth in Devon, daughter of Ann May, formerly Hutchings, and her husband William May, a publican. At the time of Elizabeth's birth the family was living at 29 James Street, which was the Portland Inn. The family appears there in the 1871 census.
Some time between 1871 and 1881 the family moved around the corner to 10 John Street. Both Elizabeth's widower grandfathers came to live there; the 1881 census has her maternal grandfather Edmund Hutchings living with them, whilst Elizabeth's paternal grandfather William May died there in 1890.
On 2nd November 1890 Elizabeth was married to a seaman named William Henry Turner. On the same day her sister Maude married William's brother Edward in the same church. The 1891 census finds Elizabeth living at 35 James Street in Plymouth; William was away from home on census night.
Elizabeth and William's first son, William Harold, was born in 1894 in Plymouth. They then moved to Pembroke Dock in Wales before their next son, Lionel Claude, was born in 1898. By 1900 they had moved back to the Plymouth area, settling at 14 Third Avenue in the Camels Head area of Devonport, where they appear in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses. Elizabeth's mother died in 1910, after which her father came to live at 14 Third Avenue, appearing there with Elizabeth, William and their three sons in the 1911 census, before dying there in 1913.
Elizabeth's elder two sons both joined the Royal Navy and served during the First World War. Her youngest son became a boilermaker and emigrated to America in 1923. By this time the family was living at 3 Vanguard Terrace in Devonport.
William died on 6th February 1924. He was 56 years old.
The following year Elizabeth's youngest son Leslie made a return visit from America, married and returned to America with his wife. Elizabeth's only known grandchildren were born in Massachusetts in the late 1920s.
In 1931 Elizabeth was admitted to a nursing home in Plymouth. Her youngest son and his wife and children made the voyage back to England, reaching Plymouth on 2nd April 1931. Elizabeth died the following day, aged 61.
