Leslie Hutchings Turner was born on 12th June 1900 at Devonport in Devon, England, son of Elizabeth Mary Turner, formerly May, and her husband William Henry Turner, a stoker in the Royal Navy. Leslie's unusual middle name was his maternal grandmother's maiden name. Leslie appears in the 1901 and 1911 censuses living with his parents and two older brothers at 14 Third Avenue in Devonport.
Leslie's next confirmed sighting is not until after the First World War. In 1923, aged 23, he sailed from Plymouth to New York. He was described as a boilermaker. Back in England, Leslie's father William died in 1924.
Leslie came back to England the following year, staying between July and September 1925, in which time he married Gladys Tucker in Devonport. The two of them returned to America together. In America they lived in Massachusetts, where they had a son and a daughter born in about 1927/8 who appear to have been twins. The 1930 American census finds them living at Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
The family paid another visit to England in 1931, arriving in Plymouth on 2nd April. Quite likely they knew that Leslie's mother was dying; she died in a nursing home in Plymouth the day after Leslie and his family arrived. Leslie returned to America in the May, whilst Gladys and the children stayed until July before returning.
The family returned to England in January 1933. By this time Leslie and Gladys had become American citizens. Their immigration papers record that it was not their intention to stay permanently in the UK. However, for whatever reason they appear not to have returned in America. They settled in the Plymouth area, and in 1939 they had the two children naturalised as British citizens.
Leslie's brother Lionel was killed in action in 1942 in the sinking of HMS Hermes in the Indian Ocean.
Leslie died in Devon in 1973, aged 73.
