Gladys May Turner was born on 31st May 1898 in the coastal village of Bunmahon in County Waterford, Ireland. She was the daughter of Maude Turner, formerly May, and her husband Edward Thomas John Turner, a coast guard. Gladys' parents were both English and had married and had their first son in England; Gladys' birth is the family's first sighting in Ireland.
The 1901 census finds Gladys living with her parents and brother at Downeen, near Rosscarbery in County Cork, another coastal location with a coast guard station. They later moved again to Castletownbere, also in County Cork. By 1911 the family had left Ireland and returned to England, where the 1911 census finds them living at St Just in Penwith in Cornwall.
By 1919 Gladys was living in Plymouth. She was married there to a sailor named Leonard Thomas Northcott. They appear to have had one daughter in 1919, born in Plymouth. In 1926 Gladys and her daughter sailed from London to Gibraltar. Their address at this time was given as 23 Belair Road, Plymouth. Perhaps they were joining Leonard out there.[5]
Gladys' father Edward died in 1928 in Plymouth. Gladys and Leonard later moved to Weymouth in Dorset, where they named their house Belair, presumably after the street they had lived in in Plymouth. Gladys' mother Maude died whilst staying with them in Weymouth in 1941, although her normal residence was given as an address in Plymouth.
Leonard died in Weymouth in 1973. Gladys survived him by nearly 11 years and died in 1984, aged about 86.
