Edward Thomas John Turner was born on 28th April 1865 at Woolwich in Kent, son of a corporal in the Army Service Corps named Edward Thomas Turner and his wife Maria Josephine. Young Edward was baptised in Woolwich when he was a few weeks old.
It seems that Edward's parents then moved to Devonport, where they had a son named William Henry in 1867, before moving to Ireland, where they had a daughter Amy in 1869 at Newbridge in County Kildare then a son George in 1872 in Dublin. They then appear to have moved back to England, where Edward's mother and siblings appear in the 1881 census at Aldershot in Hampshire, although Edward himself was not at home on census night. His next sighting is on 2nd November 1890, aged 25, when he married Maude May in Plymouth. At the time of their marriage Edward was living at 6 John Street in Plymouth, whilst Maude and her family lived a few doors down at 10 John Street. Edward was working as an able bodied seaman. On the same day that Edward married Maude, Edward's brother William married Maude's sister Elizabeth in the same church.
Edward and Maude appear in the 1891 census living at 12 Cecil Street in Plymouth, where they lived in one room. Shortly after the 1891 census they had a son, Edmund Hutchings Turner (named after Maude's maternal grandfather Edmund Hutchings). They then had a daughter, Dorothy Maude, in 1892, but she died when she was only one year old in 1893. The family's next sighting is in 1898, by which time they had left England altogether and were living in Ireland. Edward was now working as a coastguard and he appears to have been based at several different coastguard stations along the south coast of Ireland. In 1898 they had a daughter Gladys May Turner born at Bunmahon in County Waterford. The 1901 census finds the family living at Downeen near Rosscarbery in County Cork. In 1903 they had a daughter Anne Louisa Kate Turner born at Castletownbere in County Cork.
Some time between 1903 and 1909 the family returned to England, were they had a daughter Lilian Maureen Turner born in 1909 at St Just in Penwith, Cornwall. The 1911 census finds the family living at the Coast Guard Station at St Just in Penwith. The 1911 census also tells us that they had had six children, but that two had died. The identity of the sixth child has yet to be established.
In 1917 their daughter Lilian died aged just eight years old, in the St Ives area of Cornwall.
By 1919 the family was back in Plymouth. Edward's daughter Gladys was married in 1919 in Plymouth and Edward's first grandchild was born later that year. In 1921 Edward's son Edmund was married too, and another grandchild followed in 1924.
Edward died in Plymouth in 1928, aged 62. At the time of his death his address was given as 38 Quarry Park Road, Peverell, Plymouth. Maude survived him by thirteen years.
