Overview

Some identify her husband as James Gillespie. This corresponds to a marriage record given by Summers 1929":1261, for Patsey Montgomery Edmiston, 1799 by Edward Crawford

This is plausibly for Martha 2, given that her mother's maiden name is thought to be Montgomery, and "Patsy" is a common short name for "Martha". There are, however, several Martha Edmiston's in the area about this time of marriagable age. Evendence that this marriage record is for the daughter of Col. William, is needed.

That evidence may come from the following note as given by one genealogist (without identifying the source).

July 30, 1818 James and Patsy Gillespie, wife, were in Washington Co, State of Tennessee when they gave power of attorney to their "friend" William E. Kennedy of Lincoln Co, TN, to transact their business and sell their lands in Lincoln Co., TN. Held at court for County of Green 4th Monday in July 1818, registered Oct 17, 1818. Witnesses were Geo. T. Gillespie and Thos Gillespee [sic] Ephemeral Source 2 April 2009] [1]

That tends to support the identification of the marriage record for Martha Edmiston and James Gillespie as being in fact for the daugher of Col. Edmiston whose second wife, and Margarets stepmonther, was Elizabeth Kennedy. "Friend" William Kennedy of Lincoln County would appear to be a relation of Patsey's Step mother.

The above note indicates that James and Martha settled in Washington County TN, though they apparntly owned land in Lincoln County, TN along the southern border with Georgia. Perhaps they moved to Lincoln county early in their marriage, and then returned to Washington County. More likely, the property in question was a share in an inherited parcel, from kinfolk among the Kennedy's. Further work on the identity of William Kennedy is needed.
