Martha Dean was baptised on 5th June 1763 at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire. She was the daughter of Hannah Dean, formerly Welsh, and her husband Edward Dean.

On 14th February 1781, aged 17, Martha married Thomas Crawley at Great Gaddesden. They went on to have thirteen children at Great Gaddesden between 1781 and 1808. Some of the children's baptisms describe the family as paupers.

Martha's father died in 1805, and her mother died in 1821.

Thomas died in 1833, when he was said to be 82 years old. His last abode was given as Church End in Great Gaddesden.

By the time of the 1841 census, Martha was an inmate at the Hemel Hempstead Union Workhouse, working as a charwoman. She died at the workhouse later that year, being buried at Hemel Hempstead on 13th December 1841, aged 78.
