Thomas Crawley's origins have yet to be established. The age given when he died suggests he was born around 1751. His first confirmed sighting is on 14th February 1781, when he married Martha Dean at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire. They went on to have thirteen children at Great Gaddesden between 1781 and 1808, although at least five died young. Several of the children's baptisms describe the family as being paupers.

Thomas died in 1833, when he was said to be 82 years old. He was buried at Great Gaddesden on 2nd September 1833, and his last abode was given as Church End. Martha survived him by eight years.
