Jephtha Dean was baptised on 17th December 1769 at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire. He was the son of Hannah Dean, formerly Welsh, and her husband Edward Dean.

Jephtha married Theodosia Blinker at Great Gaddesden on 6th April 1795. They went on to have six children together between 1795 and 1815, with their first child being baptised just six days after their marriage. Five of the children were baptised at Great Gaddesden, and the other at neighbouring Flamstead in 1813. There is also a marked gap between their third child in 1798 and their fourth in 1810, which may indicate that there were other children beside the six whose baptisms have been found. Their youngest child's baptism in 1815 notes that Jephtha was a bricklayer.

Jeptha's father died in 1805 and his mother died in 1821.

Jephtha died aged 70, and was buried at Flamstead on 9th October 1840. Theodosia survived him by eighteen years.
