Joseph Dean was baptised on 1st February 1761 at Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire. He was the son of Hannah Dean, formerly Welsh, and her husband Edward Dean. Joseph was the eldest of their nine children.

On 5th April 1790, aged 29, Joseph married Maria Jeffs at Kensworth, a couple of miles north of Great Gaddesden. At the time of their marriage, he was living at Flamstead, just east of Great Gaddesden. They appear to have settled in Flamstead after their marriage. Only two baptisms for children of Maria and Joseph had been found, and with a thirteen year gap between them, which may indicate that others have not been found. They had a son called Thomas baptised at Flamstead in 1791, and a son called Daniel baptised at Flamstead in 1804, who sadly died as a baby.

Back in Great Gaddesden, Joseph's father died in 1805 and his mother died in 1821.

Joseph died in 1824 aged 63 and was buried at Flamstead. Maria survived him by sixteen years.
