Maria Jeffs' origins have yet to be established. The age given when she died suggests she was born around 1764. Her first confirmed sighting is on 5th April 1790, when she married Joseph Dean at Kensworth in Hertfordshire. He was living in the nearby village of Flamstead at the time of their marriage, and they appear to have settled in Flamstead after their marriage. Only two baptisms for children of Maria and Joseph had been found, and with a thirteen year gap between them, which may indicate that others have not been found. They had a son called Thomas baptised at Flamstead in 1791, and a son called Daniel baptised at Flamstead in 1804, who sadly died as a baby. Joseph died in 1824 aged 63 and was buried at Flamstead. Maria appears to have gone to live at nearby Studham in Bedfordshire, where her surviving son and his wife lived. She died in 1841, being buried at Studham on 15th February 1841. She was said to be 76 years old. References
