Facts and Events
Uncle Loran is my namesake. He got his name when his mother Lora was determined to have a child named for her but seemed unlikely to have a daughter (however, her next child was Helen). He and my father were six years apart, but quite close brothers (national guard, music, BSA, etc.). 1932 Des Moines, IA Directory shows Loran R. Braught (Dorothy M.), clk NW Bell Tel. residing at 1634 - 30th. Note that he had returned to Des Moines from Mason City, IA 1930 Census. Loran Robert Braught a member of 113 Cav.Med.Det..Natl Guard 1927-37. His official Guard record shows that he joined Oct. 10, 1927 and was "removed" Feb. 15, 1930 as Pvt 1cl due to moving from the state. He was reactivated Aug. 1, 1930 as sgt. and in Aug. 1, 1933 was promoted to Tech Sgt. June 1, 1937 he was again listed as absent (he was attending BSA professional training at NY Schiff Reservation to become a BSA career Executive). He had earned a five year service medal. Loran was the one of the first (and for years the youngest) Iowa BSA Silver Beaver recipients when employed by Bell Telephone( worked there 1927- early 1937); later in 1937 he became a professional Scouter for Tallcorn, IA Council, trained at Shiff BSA Center. He died Nov. 30, 1937. Talented marimba player. See obituary in DM Reg. Dec.3, 1937 about "Deac" being missed particularly by BSA (had earned many Scouter awards, including 1936 Silver Beaver just before becoming BSA professional in 1937). Another DM Reg. Obit NOv. 30, 1937(with his photo) in my folder for him tells of his membership in the First Federated Church Uncle Loran died of a heart infection that would have been cured by new medications released only months after his death.
