Facts and Events
Long-time shoe salesman. US Marine Corps. WW2 (I am somewhat confused here as I have a photo of him in his Marine uniform, yet the records place him in the U.S. Navy. I have not yet pursued this apparent confusion). 1925 Des Moines, IA Directory shows Roland E. Braught, clk at Jacob Shames, living at 1801 Logan. On page 1169 is Shames, Jacob Dry Goods on 329-331 E. 5th. I found Roland and Millie in Mason City, IA in 1930 Census for Cerro Gordo County. Rollie was managing a department store. His younger brother Loran was there also at that time (working with the telephone company). 1932 Des Moines, IA Directory shows Roland E. Braught (Mildred E.) filling station (apparently owner at two sites) Douglas Av SW corner 6th Ave. and 2024 Forest Ave. living at 1357 Morton Av. 1941 Des Moines Directory shows Roland E. Braught (Mildred E.) restr E. 14th NW cor. E. 14th residing at 1315 Morton Av. That Directory also shows that he owns Braught Super Service NW corner Des Moines St. (notice compass confusions). There were no children by this marriage and no other marriages to either. Brother Gene Braught said that uncle Rollie had attended East Des Moines, IA high school, but quit at grade 10 to become a shoe salesman at the Pannor Co., W. 7th & Locust, downtown DM. At one time Rollie invested in and ran an oil station with restaurant at E. 14th & Grand Ave. in DM. At age 12 (1946) I traveled alone by train from Des Moines, IA to LeMesa to spend a summer month with uncle Roland and Aunt Millie (a daring confidence by my parents and an exciting adventure for me with several interesting events added to my life; and in the lives of uncle Rollie and aunt Millie, for sure). Brothers Gene and Ralph loaned Rollie money to open his own shoe store in El Cajon, CA University Pl. After Homer's retirement, Homer and Lora (Rollie's parents) moved to LeMesa to invest in a 5 acre avocado land that was frozen and sold. These parents then moved to Pocahontas, IA to live with son Ralph, but soon returned to CA to live with Rollie and Millie, where they stayed until they each died there. Rollie was a heavy cigarette smoker (Kool brand), but Millie never smoked (she always wore shaded glasses). It is curious that Roland obtained his Social Security card # 441-09-6802 at Oklahoma, but I have not had time to pursue that matter. I did not find Roland in 1930 census for Lee Twp. Des Moines, IA (roll 677 T626) with other family in that area then. I learned that he was living in Mason City, Iowa at that time. References
