My Great Grandmother is Cora E. (Newlan) Coward, buried in Keller Cemetery, Lovington, Illinois. There are many Newlan's buried there including Sophia, wife of Joseph Newlan born in approx 1776 and died Sept 12, 1846. Newland--In Liberty township, October 10, of dropsey, Elizabeth Newland, aged 62 years, 11 months and 28 days. [b. Oct. 13, 1833]

NEWLAND--In Liberty township, Coffey county, Kansas, Oct. 13, 1896, of dropsy, Elizabeth Newland; aged 64 years.

Undertaker Gibbon reports the death of Elizabeth Newlan, of Liberty-twp., October 10. She was aged 62 years, 11 months and 28 days. Her ailment was dropsy. The funeral and interment occurred Sunday.

State of Kansas, } Coffey County, }SS / In the Probate Court. AFFIDAVIT OF DEATH AND PETITION FOR LETTERS OF ADMINISTRATION. In the Matter of the Estate of Joseph Newlan, late of said County, deceased.

 On this 27th day of February 1897 personally appeared before me, the undersigned, Judge of said Court, William Barrett who being by me duly sworn, according to law, doth upon his oath, depose and say, that Joseph Newlan died on the third day of March 1896, at Coffey, County and State aforesaid, and that to the best of his knowledge and belief, the names, ages and places of residence of the heirs of said deceased are as follows, to wit:

Evan Newlan, Ills, Charlot Eldred, Burlington, Levi Newlan, Nancy Barrett, Gridley, Joseph M. Newlan and the children & heirs of Carolin Massey deceased, Woodson Co., minor children & heirs of John Newlan, decd, Burlington, minor children & heirs of Eliza Barrett deceased, Gridley and that he died without a will, as affiant verily believes; and he further states, that the said Joseph Newlan died seized and possessed of an estate consisting of ______ [Rents?] of Land; all of said personal estate being estimated to be worth about $100.00. Your petitioner would respectfully pray that your Honor will grant Letters of Administration to H.B. Reed. [signed] Wm Barrett

 It Appearing to the satisfaction of the Court, that the matters and things set forth in the above affidavit are true, and it further appearing, that the said H.B. Reed is a competent, proper and suitable person to be entrusted with the administration of said estate;

It is Ordered by the Court, That the said H.B. Reed be appointed as Administrator of said estate, etc. etc., [Two of Joseph Newlan's sons along with Isaac Massey fought the appointment of H.B. Reed as the Administrator saying that he was not an honest person, etc., but Mr. Reed was not replaced by the Court.] ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ This is what I have found concerning Joseph Newlan at the library here [in Burlington, Coffey Co., KS]: Joseph Newland buried Fairhope Cemetery, Liberty Township [Coffey Co., KS], death date 3-3-1896, 85 years of age. Elizabeth Newland, Fairhope Cemetery, death date 10-10-1896, age 62 years 11 months 28 days. [b. _____] There is no tombstone for Joseph or Elizabeth; information was from funeral home records.
