Lovington, Moultrie, Ills / Sept 23th, 1874 / Dear Cousin / Your kind letter was received Some week or more ago / was read with care and attention but I am Sorrow to tell you that it is almost impossible for me to come down to see you this fall. Ill tell you my reasons and then I think you will Excuse me / I was married September 6th and was thinking of coming that following week but did not get off / then corn cutting come / then I had to Stay and cut my corn and then My younger Brother [John] and Sister [Caroline] and her man [Isaac Massey] came back from Kansas / So they are likely to be here afew days untill they can find a place / So I am obliged to build me a house this fall / So please excuse me for not coming / I do regret that I dident come when Evan [Love] come but I hope the time will come when I can pay you a visit / So when you get to your journeys end I beg you not forget me and tell me how times is there / please send me one of your picturs / I thought I would get mine and my womans and send them to you but have failed to do so / I saw Evan [Love] in town last Saturday and [my] Brother John was with me / I hope you asafe and happy time threw out your travels and when you return I ask you come and see me / this leaves us in tolerably good health / as I have nothing of importance to write I will Close by hoping those few lines will find you all injoying the pleasures of life / hoping to hear from you in due time / Yours Cousins Until death / E.
