Early Land Survey for Joseph Howe

• November 7 1749 - Then Survey d for Mr. Joseph How a certain Tract of Waste and ungranted Land Lying in Augusta County and on the Lost River of Cacapehon and bounded as followeth Beg. at a Corner of the Land Survey d for James Scott a Hickory red Oak and Maple on the Mountain Side and running thence along the Mountain N° 35° East Two hundred and Six Poles to two white Oaks and Maple on the Mountain thence leaving the Mountain and run thence N° 55° West 60 p to the Road Three Hundred Poles to Red Oak Chesnut Oak and Hickory on a Mountain Side thence S° 35° West Two hundred and Six poles to a Large white Oak James Scotts Corner thence with his line S° 55° East Three hundred poles to the Beg: East. • Vol. 1 - MAY 24, 1750. - (373) Joseph How directed to set up sign posts and keep it up with these: John Elswick, Andrew Viney, John Dunbarr, William McBride, Francis McBride, Robert Denton, James Thomas, James Scot, James Hamilton, William Miller and Valentine Sevier.

• Page 26.--14th December, 1750. William McBride's will, laborer--Wife. Sarah; son, Francis. Executors, son Francis and Joseph How. Grandchildren, Margaret and Sarah McBride, 1 plantation between Francis McBride and the Bigg Cow Run on Capecappen in Augusta County. Teste: William Warden, Mary McBride, Ann Dunharr. Proved, 21st March, 1754, by Mary and Ann. Joseph How refuses to execute and Francis McBride qualifies, with sureties Jacob Gum and James Thomas. Francis' mark.

Joseph Howe, Elizabeth's father and other pioneers, were early settlers in the Lost Valley of the Cacapon River, which is the next valley west of the Shenandoah Valley in the Kernstown area. The property was under the proprietorship of Lord Fairfax and he was not happy with the squatter on his land. In 1748 he sent George Washington to survey fifteen sections of land, each 350 to 400 acres. Joseph helped George survey his section of land. Another section was surveyed for the Dunbar family consisting of Ann, the mother, her son Philip, and his family including his daughter Eleanor. Joseph Howe and Philip Dunbar's daughter Eleanor were married in about 1750. (Note: a few corrections made to help the reader).
