Joseph Brooks settled on Sale Creek in the southern part of Rhea in 1806, First Trustee of county-widow owned land when it was changed to Hamilton in 1819

Joseph and Mary Brooks left Knox county when the lands of the Cherokee made available by the treaty of 1805 were opened to settlement and selected for their home a good location in the extreme souther part of Rhea county.

Joseph was the son of John Brooks a Revolutinary War soldier who was born in Ireland. Joseph and his brother Moses were married to sisters. Mary and Agnes the daughters of Robert and Mary McElroy Gamble.
