Will Abstract

Jonathan Reed of West Augusta, Colony of Virginia, dated November 4, 1776, attested by Hugh McCreedy, Noah Fleaharty, appoints Edward Cook and Dorsey Pentecost and Joseph Beckett, to settle and have adjusted all his late public accounts in regard to his vitualiing the Troops stationed on the Ohio, proved September 23, 1777.
Beneficiaries, wife Sarah, sons John, Jonathan, daughters Mary, Sarah, Martha, Ruth, executors Edward Cook, wife Sarah, and Joseph Beckett.

    Sarah Reed, Joseph Becket and Edward Cook, Executors of the last will and Testament of Jonathan Reed deceased with Joseph Beeler, Christopher Beeler and Paul Froman, their securities came into Court and entered into Bond for the true performance of the said Executorship. Whereupon the said Sarah Reed, Joseph Becket and Edward Cook took the Oath of Executrix and Executors of the last will and Testament of said Jonathan Reed Decd.

    Ordered that Benjamin Davis, Samuel Burns, John Wright and Dorsey Pentecost or any two or more of them, being first sworn to appraise the Estate of Jonathan Reed deceased and make Return to Next Court.

    They were the Court Record of Yohogania County, Va. 1776-1781 and the Negro (slave) Register of Washington County 1782-1851 (the county was not incorporated as Washington until 1781).

    In the inventory of Jonathan Reed, dated Dec. 18, 1777, two Negro males, Pompy and Frank, were valued at 250 and 200 pounds respectively. Reed's bay horse, in comparison, was listed at 35.
