According to the Shankland Family Research by Albert Shankland, he married first Mary Elizabeth Schultz (1838-1890) in 1859 and had 8 children. After her death, he married Emeline Duncan.

 According to 'Descendants of William Shankland', he and Mary had Mary Etta; William, 1861- ; George Lincoln; John Milton, 1865-1934; Olivia; Martha Ann, 1868-1951; Thomas Lee, 1870-1940; and Guy, 1872-1927. Mary Elizabeth died on 8 October 1890.
 In the 1860 census for Center, Boone Co., Indiana, John Shankland is 27, farmer from Kentucky, with Mary 22 from Ohio. {p. 673}
 In the 1870 census for Milford p.o., Prairie Green, Iroquois Co., Illinois, 'Johnson B. Shankland' is a farmer age 33 from Kentucky.  In the household are his wife Mary E. 32 Ohio; and children Mary E. 10 Indiana, William A. 9 IN, Geor. W. 8 IN, John M. 6 Illinois, Olly 4 IL, Martha A. 2 IL, and Alvin C. 3 IL. {p.6, dwelling #42, family #41}  He is next door to Kendall Shankland.
 In the 1880 census for Prairie Green, Iroquois Co., Illinois, J. P. Shankland is a farmer, age 43 from Kentucky (father Virginia, mother Maryland)  His wife Mary is 42, from Ohio (parents Kentucky).  Their children are Mary E. 19; William 18; George 16; John 15; Olivia 13; Martha 12; Thomas 10; and Guy 8 -- all born in Illinois.  {p.345c, NARA T9-0214}  His brother Spencer is on the same page.

 In the 1900 census for Deer Creek, Cass Co., Indiana, Porter Shankland is 61, born May 1839 in Kentucky (parents same), married twice, farmer; with [second] wife Emma 58, born May 1841 in Indiana (parents same), married twice, with 0 of 0 children living. Daughter Maryette is 39 b. (Nov?) 1860 in Indiana; and son William is 37, born Nov 1861 -- both born Indiana, parents Kentucky, single. {ed 6, sh 11 page 88a} 
 In the 1910 census for Deer Creek, Cass Co., Indiana, Johnson P. Shankland is 72, born  in Kentucky (father Kentucky, mother Indiana ), married twice, this time for 12 years, 'own income'; with wife Emaline 62, born in Indiana (father Indiana, mother Kentucky), married once, with 0 of 2 children living. {ed 35, sh 9b, p. 85}
 Probably the Johnson P. Shankland buried in the Center United Brethren Church Cemetery in Deer Creek, Cass Co., Indiana.  His headstone reads "J. P. Shankland, 1837-1917" and the WPA death records show his name as Johnson P. Shankland, died June 4, 1917, age 78. Next to him is 'Emeline Shankland, wife of J. P., 1857 - 1947'.  {Cass Co.
