John Barton Webber was born on 16 August 1838 in Palmer, Hampden, Massachusetts. In 1858 he went to Illinois to live with his sister, Mary Sweet, and work as a farmer. He enlisted in the Union army in Company B, Illinois 3rd Cavalry Regiment on 17 August 1861, at the beginning of the Civil War. He was wounded in the Battle of Pea Ridge in Northwest Arkansas in March 1862. He also contracted typhoid fever and was in the hospital in Memphis, Tennessee for awhile before he died on 18 July 1864 at the age of 25. This was not uncommon during the war. Approximately two thirds of soldiers’ deaths during the Civil War were caused by diseases as opposed to battle wounds. Carrie, his sister, apparently named two of her sons after him.
