Richard Merrill Webber, known as “Merrill,” was born on 9 June 1826 in Palmer, Hampden, Massachusetts. He was twelve years old when his father moved the family to Ohio. He married Mary Hogue in 1846 in Hinckley, Medina, Ohio. Mary Hogue was born on 20 September 1831 in Henley, England, having immigrated to America with her parents when she was ten years old. According to Washburn, Merrill and Mary lived in Hinckley township for a time before moving to Illinois for several years, and then back to Hinckley again. The family appears on the census in Medina County, Ohio for every census year they are there, so they must have lived in Illinois for less than ten years in between censuses. They moved back to Hinckley, where they both died, Merrill on 10 July 1886 at the age of 60, and Mary on 5 December 1893 at the age of 62. They were both buried in Town Line Cemetery, also known as Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Brunswick, Medina, Ohio.
