Facts and Events
Lucy Lovina Webber was born on 6 January 1822 in Monson, Hampden, Massachusetts. She married Philander Gage of Ripley, Chautauqua, New York in 1840 or 1841 in Hinckley, Medina, Ohio. He died four months later, and Lucy returned to live with her parents. Lucy married Hiram Sykes on 18 December 1843. Hiram Sykes was born on 20 May 1799 in Dorset, Bennington, Vermont. At the time her married Lucy, he was a widower with two daughters. They lived in Westfield, Chautauqua, New York, until moving to Hinckley, Medina, Ohio in December 1854. It is likely they moved to Hinckley in response to the death of Lucy’s father, which had occured a month previously. Lucy was the oldest in the family and now had a widowed mother and a sister, Carrie, still living at home. In 1860 her mother and Carrie were living in the Sykes household. Hiram died on 31 January 1875 at the age of 75 in Hinckley, Medina, Ohio and was buried in Maple Hill Cemetery. Lucy was taken care of by her children until she died on 1 October 1914 at the age of 92 and was also buried in Maple Hill Cemetery. Lucy was the oldest Webber still alive when Lucy Washburn’s book was published in 1909. A photograph of her appears in the front pages of the book, with the caption: “Lucy (Webber) Sykes: Oldest Child of Richard Webber, now Aged 87 Years (born 1822). Everybody’s ‘Aunt Lucy’.” Washburn also refers to her in the preface, where she says “I wrote to several people and asked many questions; the record was complete, but scattered about … Our Aunt Lucy Sykes is a strong link in this chain, for she remembers seeing the aunts and uncles of the second generation.” No doubt she provided much of the information on this particular set of Webbers that Washburn included in the book.
