Notes

From Genforum Message Board:
The problem is that there were at least four John TATES in the 3rd generation and that “Junior” was often used to denote age as well as a father/son relationship.
1) John3 (1774-1864) of James2 – to KY and MO
2) John3 of John2 – died bef 1802 (1864?)
3) John3 of William2 – to IN 1882/3
4) John3 of Robert2 – m. Nancy Moffett

So which John TATE married Elizabeth McCLENACHAN? Of the four candidates, the last two can be excluded. A court case (below) seems to exclude the second candidate. If one of those unnamed sons was John, that John could not have been married and having children with Elizabeth McCLENACHAN after 1802.

“Finley vs. Tate--O. S. 280; N. S. 99--Bill by Samuel Finley and Mary, his wife, daughter of John Tate, who died December, 1802, testate. John's son, Isaac, removed to Kentucky. John at death left following children, viz: Oratrix Mary (married at that time). Nancy also married then to Adam McChesney, Ellen, Drusilla, Jane, Elizabeth, Clorinda, one other daughter and two sons, all since dead under age, unmarried and intestate. Nancy McChesney died soon after her father, leaving an only child, Jane Eliza McChesney. Her husband, Adam McChesney, has also died, leaving Jane Eliza his only heir and infant. Ellen is now wife of John Finley of North Carolina. Drusilla has married John D. Ewin of Rockbridge. Jane has married Jacob Vanlear of Augusta. Elizabeth and Clorinda are unmarried (latter is infant).” [Chalkley, V2, p 212]

At least two sources say the son of Capt. James TATE married Elizabeth McCLENACHAN: - “The Mitchell-Doak Group” by Harry Mitchell - “The Stuart Family” by R.B. Herbert

Additional analysis

The first two Johns above should be corrected as follows:

1) John3 (1774-1854) of James2 – to KY and MO. Clearly identified by Tate's heirs vs. Tate's executors (Chalkley, v3, p 126). He is the one who married Elizabeth McCLENACHAN.
2) John3 of John2 – b. circa 1775; probably died bef 1814 when he was not mentioned by name with his siblings in Finley vs. Tate (Chalkley, v2, p 212). According to a WorldConnect database by Ann Blomquist, a Tate researcher, this John did marry (wife unknown) and had daughters Elizabeth and Susannah who married in Botetourt Co., VA.

    v2, p 212.

When he was not named in Finley vs. Tate and was likely one of the two unnamed sons "all since dead under age, unmarried and intestate."
