Bob, jbowden@@greennet.net (Jeff Bowden) is the person to contact on this branch, he is the expert on this line. Below are the notes I have in my file on John and Hannah Barnaby Small, parents of John who m. Sarah and Priscilla. Don't know if this is any help to you or a rehash I may have already sent you. Jim

Notes under John Sr. and wife Priscilla / Sarah

MF Descendant 6:18; Small Gen, Underhill pg172 m Feb 24, 1727/8 Plymouth VR:174; MF 6:18 Page 101: 4. John4 Small. The wife of "John Smole," in Provincetown, was Hannah ---; they probably were married about 1728. Four children were born in Provincetown; several others were born after they removed to Falmouth, later Cape Elizabeth, but their births were not recorded. Milliken, in his brief account of the early settlers of the Narraguagus Valley, Washington County, Maine, says that John Small went to Milbridge, about 1762, where "he settled on the lot below the creek near the Methodist meeting house." Milbridge, at the mouth of Narraguagus River where it empties into Narraguagus Bay, was an ideal spot for a mariner. It is probable that John Small continued to follow the sea for a few years after he went there, though he was later succeeded by his several stalwart sons. How many sons there were is problematical. Milliken mentions Elisha, "four or five years old, in 1762," as the "oldest son by a second wife" (probably Priscilla Strout, sister to Joseph), also "a younger brother Ebenezer." There were "several half-brothers. One of these was Jonathan Small."

In the fall of 1775, when Captain Mowatt with his fleet was menacing the coast of Maine, the Smalls who served to guard the neighboring seaports of eastern Maine, in Captain Francis Shaw, Jr.'s company, were John Small (Jr.), ser-geant, Daniel, Jeremiah, and Samuel Small, privates. In 1777, Josep Elisha, and Ebenezer Small, also of Narraguagus were in the service. These all appear to have been sons to John Small, Sr., as no other family of the name was living at that time in the vicinity. The Mayflower Descendant vol 9:102,103 Vol 11:47 Issue by first wife: I. Lydia5, b. Oct. 26, 1729, in Provincetown. II. John, b. Oct. 28, 1731, in Provincetown. He went to Narraguagus with his father. III. Hannah, b. March 26, 1734, in Provincetown. IV. Daniel, b. May 19, 1736, in Provincetown. He also re-moved to Narraguagus. V. Jonathan, b. probably at Falmouth, later Cape Elizabeth. He "took up the lot next south of the Dea. [Elisha] Small lot," at Milbridge; his sons "were Joh Joseph, Timothy, Daniel and James." His wife may have been Jane Trundy, of Falmouth (Cape Elizabeth). VI. Jeremiah, b. probably in Falmouth; he went to Narraguagus. VII. Timothy, b. May 16, 1742, in Falmouth (Cape Elizabeth). Mary, wife of Timothy Small, was b. March 25, 1745, in Falmouth (Cape Elizabeth); they were married about 1765, her maiden name is not known. They were living in Narraguag when their first child was born; before 1771, they returned to Cape Elizabeth; in 1777, they were in Limington, where they remained a short time. Timothy Small bore a prominent part in the lawsuits with the Ossipee Proprietors. As his name appears second on the list of the heirs of Daniel3 Small, he probably represented the interest of his father, John4 Small, second son to Daniel." Timothy Small was town clerk of Cape Elizabeth, 1802-1816. He d. "Feb. 27, 1818, aged 75 years," and was buried in the Eastern Cemetery, at Portland.

Early Pleasant River Families by Leonard Tibbetts & Darryl Lawson, Picton Press, Rockport, Me pg. 507 where under J Small it lists - Apparent children by 1st wife: i. Jonathan(6), b say 1752; d 1784+; lived at Millbridge; m. by 1772 (name unknown); 4 known sons: John(7), Joseph(7), Timothy(7), and James Archibald(7)

This is corroborated by J.A. Miilliken, The Narraguagus Valley, Some Account of its Early Settlement and Settlers, pg.4. It states: " In 1762, John Small came from Cape Elizabeth and settled on the lot below the creek, near the Methodist meeting-house in Millbridge. His son Elisha, afterward so well known as Deacon Small, was then four or five years old. He was the oldest son by a second wife. He had several older half-brothers. One of these, Jonathan Small, took up the lot next south of the Dea. Small lot, the same afterwards owned by Joseph Tucker. The sons of Jonathan were John, Joseph, Timothy, Daniel & James.
