Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • John Shelton acquired several tracts in Augusta County, as follows: A, 650 acres on the waters of Clinch River; B, 1,400 acres on a branch of Clinch called Mockison Creek; C, 940 acres on the Middle Fork of Indian River; D, 995 acres on the Indian River; E, 155 acres on south side of the Indian River; F, 1,000 acres on two branches of Clinch River; also one undivided share of a patent to Col. James Patton and Others, of which the above lands are a part. [as listed in the disposition below]

Disposition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 109.--19th November, 1767. John Shelton, of Hanover County, to Patrick Henry, Jr., of Louisa County, £200, mortgage of the following tracts patented to John, 16th August, 1756: A, 650 acres on the waters of Clinch River; B, 1,400 acres on a branch of Clinch called Mockison Creek; C, 940 acres on the Middle Fork of Indian River; D, 995 acres on the Indian River; E, 155 acres on south side of the Indian River; F, 1,000 acres on two branches of Clinch River; also one undivided share of a patent to Col. James Patton and Others, of which the above lands are a part. Teste: Thomas Jefferson, &c. Delivered: Ephraim Dunlap, 30th September, 1772. [Note: Patrick Henry, one of America's "Founding Fathers", was the son-in-law of John Shelton. His daughter Sarah was Patrick Henry's 1st wife].

John Shelton, of Hanover County, to Patrick Henry, Sr., all equity of redemption in three tracts, A 940 acres on Middle Fork of Indian River; B 995 acres on Indian River, C 1400 acres on Mockeson's Creek of Clinch River, which Patrick is to sell or otherwise dispose of Teste: Wm. Parks Shelton, John Shelton, Jr. Delivered: Ephraim Dunlap, 30th September, 1772.
  • Page 272.--9th May, 1772. William and John Shelton, of Hanover, to John Poage. £22, 35 acres, part of 464 acres patented to Robert Green, 12th January, 1772, on South Branch of Potomac.
  • Page 212.----19th June, 1775. William and John Shelton to George Coil, part of patent to Robert Green, 12th January, 1746, on South Branch of Potowmack. Proved, 20th June, 1775, court being adjourned from Fort Dunmore.
