Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

John Mitchell acquired a patent of 400 acres "on Benjamin Borden's Line" on 15 March 1744, per the record below.

Disposition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 73.--12th May, 1746. John Mitchell, farmer, to Wm. Mitchell, farmer, £40 current money Virginia; 400 acres in Augusta; Benj. Borden's line, part of land patented to John, 15th March, 1744. Acknowledged, 12th May, 1746, by John Mitchell and Mary, his wife.

  • Vol. 1 - ORIGINAL PETITIONS AND PAPERS FILED IN THE COUNTY COURT. 1750 - I, John Mitchell, son of John Mitchell, and brother of William Mitchell of the County of Augusta, held and firmly bound to Thomas Wilson, late of Pennsylvania. 14th September, 1762. John, Jr., obtained patent with his father's money and for his father's benefit for 400 acres on a branch of James River, known by the name of Broad Spring Branch, which pond was afterwards sold by John, Sr., to his son, William, and William and wife, Margaret, have sold the same to said Thomas Wilson, indemnity against any claims of John, Jr., or any one under him (not recorded).

VA Order Book 18 - 10 July 1783 - On the motion of William Mitchell heir at Law of John Mitchell who was killed at ninety six ordered that the certified to the and in ordered that the said William may obtain a warrant for the probation of Land due to the dec'd (NOTE the 1783 will and death date belong to John Mitchell 1987-1783, not his son John Mitchell. )
