Acquisition of Land from Orange County, Virginia Records:

• Pages 256-60. 4-5 Dec. 1742. John Pattison of Orange County, yeoman, to John McNale (s/b McNabb) of same, yeoman. Lease and release; for ₤22 current money. 120 (prob. s/b 420) acres 3 rood 17 pole, part of a large tract belonging to Benjamin Borden, Gent., containing 92,100 acres by pattent 6 Nov. 1739, on the west side of Mill Creek... corner to Robt. Poage's land... up the creek... (signed) John (X) Pattison. Wit: John Buchannan, David Dryden, Wm, Evans [Evins]. 26 May 1743. Acknowledged by John Pattison. [Orange County Virginia Deed Book 7, Dorman, pg. 55]. (Note: this transcription should probably be for the entire 420-acre tract of John Patterson, since from the disposition below it is clearly larger than the 120 acres listed in the transcription. The dispositions below add up to at least 320 acres.).

• Page 842.--29th August, 1750. John McNabb to Baptist McNabb, 218 acres in Borden's tract, sold by Borden to John Patterson, and by Patterson to Jno. McNabb, 25th September, 1742, on Mill Cr.; corner David Dryden; corner Arthur McClure. Teste: David Dryden, Chas. Campbell, Francis Beatey.

Francis McCown's will, farmer - wife, Margaret; sons, George and Francis; son, Malcom, the plantation formerly belonging to Mathew Young; son, James, the plantation in the Forks; daughters, Margaret, Nancy, Katrine; son, James, the plantation Saml. Norwood formerly lived on, and to pay Malcom ₤5 when come to age of "menuarty"; daughter, Isbell. Seven children. Executors, wife Margaret and son George. Teste: John Cunningham, Wm, McKemey, John McNabb. Proved, 18th November, 1761, by the witnesses.--Margaret refuses to execute. George qualifies, with John McCown, Robt. Christian, George Moffett.

Capt. John McNabb

In the Winter of 1783, Indians began to steal horses and cattle from the Big Pigeon settlements in Cocke County TN. Major Peter Fine and Captain John McNabb raised a company of men and followed the Indians across the mountains into North Carolina, where they killed one Indian and wounded another, but recovered the stolen horses. The Indians fired upon them, killing Vinett Fine, and wounding Thomas Holland, and a man by the name of Bingham. Because there was no time for grave-digging and apparently no safety in trying to escape with the body, the ice in the creek was broken and the body placed there. Before the men could return for it, the creek became flooded by a sudden change in temperature, and the body was washed away and was never recovered. To this day, the creek is known as Fine's Creek. Fine's Branch, in 1998, is in Cocke County, TN.
