Image:HutchinsonJohn Beverley Manor NE.jpg

John Hutchinson's land (Beverley Manor NE, 200 acres, 1740) as shown on the map meticulously drawn by J.R. Hildebrand, cartographer. This map is copyrighted©, used by permission of John Hildebrand, son of J.R. Hildebrand, April, 2009. [Note: two tracts aquired by George Hutchinson, the brother of John, and also Ephraim Wilson, the son-in-law of John Hutchinson, are located nearby to the northwest].

Acquisition of Land from Orange County, Virginia Records:

  • Pages 103-06. 23-24 July 1740. William Beverley of Essex County, Gent., to John Hutchisone of Orange County. Lease and release; for £8.15.2 current money. 292 acres, part of Beverley Mannor... corner to John Seawright... the Reverend Mr. Anderson's line... (signed) W. Beverley. Wit: Gibbons Jennings, John Lewis, John Willson. 24 July 1740. Acknowledged by William Beverley, Gent. [Relinquishment of dower as above, Beverley to Page.] [Orange County, Virginia Deed Book 3, Dorman, pg. 41].

Disposition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 132.--20th March, 1754. John Hutcheson and Margaret Hutcheson, his wife, to John Craig, 292 acres in Beverley Manor. Cor. John Searight, stump in a poison field. Rev. Mr. Anderson's line. [Notes: the whereabouts of John and Margaret Hutchinson after they sold their land in Beverley Manor has not been determined, although it appears that they may have moved to the "South Branch" (Potomac River) area, where it appears that this John Hutchinson was killed by Indians in April 1758].

John Hutchinson Killed by Indians in 1758

John Hutchison is included in the list from Chalkley's of Indian Attacks of 1755-1759 in Augusta County of settlers killed by "the enemy" (most likely Shawnee Indians being spurred on by the French) in Augusta County:

John Hutcheson, at South Branch, killed [Note: some researchers believe that the John Hutchinson that was killed by Indians in 1758 may be John Hutchinson, Jr., this John Hutchinson's son, although there are no apparent guardianship records for any of John Hutchinson, Jr.'s children listed in Chalkley's Court records, similar to other settlers killed by Indians during the same time period. Additional research necessary].
