Some researchers have placed John Gilliland as a son of James Gilliland and Hannah Laird of Washington County, Virginia, and marrying Sarah Berry likely in Washington County, Virginia. This appears to be in error and is likely a different John Gilliland, as this John Gilliland's father left his will in Botetourt County, as are the two marriage records for his marriages to Peggy Paxton and Sarah Walker.
