He is most likely the 23-year-old John Curley, a Catholic gardener, born in Kinvara, Galway, who was living in Ballybrack, Dublin on September 19, 1866, when he was convicted for three assaults on police officers. He was sentenced to 2 months in prison for each of the three counts, and fined 3 pounds for each. He was released from prison on March 6. These may have been connected to the Fenian uprisings against British rule. Ballybrack was a hub of Fenian activity.

By the time of the 1901 Census, he was living at St. Vincent's Female Reformatory. From 1908-1912, John Curley was a registered voter living in the gate lodge of St. Vincent's Female Reformatory in the New Kilmainham ward of Dublin.

In 1913, a John and Thomas Curley are living at 10 Buckingham St, Upper, in the Mountjoy section of Dublin.

In 1911, house 10.3 Buckingham St. was occupied by 59-year-old Bridget Curley, born in Co. Roscommon, and her children: John (31), b. Co. Dublin; Thomas (27), b. Co. Kildare; Delia (22), b. Dublin City; Margaret (14), b. Dublin City. Her husband Thomas Curley had died in 1908. A Margaret Mary Curley, daughter of Thomas and Bridget (Goulding) Curley, of 15 Hill Street in Dublin North, was born 11 May 1896.

Their son John was born in Scribblestown on 7 August 1879. The birth was reported by Thomas, who signed by mark. He was baptized on August 10. In the baptismal register, his mother's name is given as Golden.

In 1901, residents of a house 39 in North William Street (Mountjoy, Dublin), were Thomas Curley (55), b. Co. Galway, a groom and domestic servant who cannot read; 49-year-old Bridget, b. Co. Roscommon; John (21), b. Co. Dublin; Thomas (17), b. Co. Kildare; Delia (13), b. Dublin City; Margaret (4), b. Dublin City.

Thomas Curley and Bridget Golden were married in the Roman Catholic chapel of Castledermot, County Kildare, on 15 May 1878. They are both servants living in Birdtown, Athy, County Kildare. His father's name is Thomas, her father's name is Bernard.

Bridget Curley Donnelly of Dublin was probably a sister.

There was a Patrick Curley living at Kinvara in 1826 (Tithe Applotment). A Pat Curley, butcher and carpenter, was living in Kinvara in 1834, according to a list compiled by the pastor and found in the sacramental registers.
