Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:

• Page 140.--10th August, 1768. Joseph Gamwell to John Cawley, £20, grantor's part of one-half lot woodland northwest of Staunton, 14 acres, being half of a lot of 28 acres, part of No. 9 of part in No. 10, surveyed for Robert McClennchan, between lots of James Hughes and John Kerr, conveyed from Robert to Margaret and Joseph Gamwell, 22d May, 1760, the other half being since sold to Archer Mathews; also 1/4 acres in Staunton, part of lot 5, being the part John Cawley now lives on.

• Page 272.--27th September, 1769. John Cawley and Margaret, of Staunton, to Sampson and George Mathews, £40, 1/2 lot of woodland on northwest of Staunton, 14 acres, part in No. 9 and part in No. 10, surveyed for Robert McClenachan lying between lots of James Hughes and John Kerr, see deed McClenachan to Margaret and Joseph Gamwell, 22d May; 1760; also 1/2 of a half-acre lot in Staunton; half of lot No. 5 also conveyed by McClenachan in above deed; both which pieces since sold by Gamwell to Archer Mathews, the remainder being conveyed by Joseph Gamwell, to said John Cawley, now husband of the late said Margaret Gamwell, August, 1777. • Page 353.--10th February, 1775. John Cawley's will, of Staunton--To wife, Margaret; estate to be divided between children of elder brother, Michael and younger brother, Thomas, and sister Margaret; to brother, Michael; devises to be sold: 3 hides in possession of Harman Lovingood, tanner, also the venire money due from the Colony on account of Bridget Doyle, criminal, also claims against the County for the past expedition; to Valentine Cloninger. Executors, John Poage and Capt. Alex. McClenachan Teste: Saml. Bell, James Culbertson, Daniel Kidd. Proved, 20th June, 1775, by the witnesses. Widow Margaret renounces the provisions of the will. Alex. McClenachan qualifies with William Bowyer, Daniel Kidd. John Poage also qualifies.

• Vol. 1 - JUNE 20, 1775. - (74) John Cawley's will proved--Margaret, the widow, refuses to accept the provisions.

Stephen Loy and Mary ( ) to John Sharp Watkins, 5 shillings, half lot No. 14 in Staunton, formerly leased by Beverley, 22d February, 1749, to Alexander Wright, who conveyed it to said Thomas Fulton, and now conveyed by Stephen Loy. Teste: Randal Lockhart, Michael Weaver, John Cawley. Delivered: Jno. Sharp Watkins, 4th August, 1773.

Andrew Lewis and George Matthews, executors of David Stewart, to Samuel Cowdon, one moiety of 321 acres conveyed by Patrick Martin and Jane, 17th September, 1763, to Samuel Cowdan and Andrew Greier, this moiety of 160-1/2 acres conveyed to David by Andrew Greer and Ruth, 23d August, 1766, on Back Creek. Teste: Sampson Mathews, John Cawley, Pat. Lockhart, Mathew Read. Walter Cnnningham.

• Page 120.--11th September, 1769. Will Gwynn to John Cawley and Daniel Kidd, of Staunton, £6.5.6, 1 horse and several cows. Teste: M. Bowyer, Christopher Graham. Delivered: Grantee, 1770.

• Page 277.--27th September, 1769. John Cawley, of Staunton, innkepeer, to Sampson and George Mathews, £50.9.2, 5 horses, 1 iron kettle fixed in the kitchen, and all household furniture, mortgage; if this is not sufficient, then Mathews are to sell a 1/2 lot in Staunton whereon John now lives, and 13 acres of wood land belonging thereto conveyed to Mathews this day.

• Page 69.--7th July, 1770. Archer Mathews and Lettice to Sampson and George Mathews, £20, one-half lot woodland northwest of Staunton, 15 acres; also one-half of lot 5 in Staunton; the former is one-half of lot No. 10, and both conveyed by Robert McClenachan to Margaret and Joseph Gamble, 22d March, 1760, and since conveyed to Archer Mathews. Teste: Pat. Lockhart, John Cowley and John Walsh.

• MAY 22, 1772. - (376) Following to be paid as patrollers, viz: Valentine Cloninger, John Redpath, James Culbertson, Thos. Smith, John Cawley, Thos. Rhoads, John Andrew, Alexr. St. Clair, Christopher Graham.

• Page 185.--11th October, 1773. James Hardgraves' will--To wife Elizabeth, to son Robert Hardgrave, to son Francis Hardgrave, executors. Teste: John Cawley, Daniel Kidd, Elizabeth Griffin. Proved, 20th November, 1773. by the witnesses. Elizabeth qualifies with John Frogg, James Hill.

• Page 220.--19th March, 1774. Mathews to John Cawley. John Cawley now husband of the late Margaret Gamwell, who was wife of Joseph Gamwell. (Note: this record is in error, either written incorrectly or a transcription error. Joseph Gamble married Margaret Patton's daughter Margaret. This record has caused many researchers to conclude that Joseph married who was actually his mother-in-law, and this record disagrees with several other records!).

• Page 467.--7th October, 1776. Margaret Cawley's will, of Staunton--To grandchildren, William and Margaret Fulton, children of Thomas Fulton, of Town of Camden, South Carolina, house and half lot in Staunton; to grandson, William Gamel, son of Joseph Gamel; late husband, John Cawley. Executors, Sampson Mathews and her brother, Wm. Patton. Teste: Peter Hog, James Buchanan, Samuel Bell. Proved, 21st January, 1777. Executors qualified.

• Page 74.--8th February, 1777. Margaret Cawby's [sic] estate appraised.
