Early Land Acquisition in Frederick County, VA

• Dr. John Briscoe received a Fairfax grant for 400 acres located on branches of Opequon Creek (Note: a branch of the Shenandoah River), which was assigned to Briscoe by Mary Littler, widow of John Littler. [Gray, Northern Neck Warrants, K-67 and Joiner. Northern Neck Warrants and Surveys, Frederick County, Virginia, p. 19]. • K-67: Dr. John Briscoe of Frederick County, 400 acres in said County. Surv. John Baylis. Adjoining Johnathon Tayler, John Littler dec'd. on Opeckon. 1 March 1760. [Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, 1742-1775, Vol. 2, pg. 115].

• Dr. John Briscoe combined two tracts (prob. surveyed earlier) and received a grant from Lord Fairfax for 462 acres on 17 April 1760. [Berkeley County West Virginia Deed Book 3, pg. 494]. [Source: Pioneers of Old Frederick County, Virginia, by Cecil O'Dell, pg. 153].

• David Lewis, Jr. sold 61-acres of his 164-acre grant on 6 August 1764 to Dr. John Briscoe for 500 pounds, and the remaining 103 acres were sold on 2 June 1766 to James Stewart for 50 pounds. [Source: Pioneers of Old Frederick County, Virginia, by Cecil O'Dell, pg. 153].

• O-126: John Briscoe of Frederick County, 2,060 acres in said County. Surv'd for my own use my Mr. George Washington and Plot returned in my Name 26 Nov. 1750. On Old Waggon Road, adj. George Martin, Tootle's Hole Glade, Bear Garden Tract, Capt. Calmees. 1 March 1768. [Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, 1742-1775, Vol. 2, Gray, pg. 195].

• John Briscoe received a 2,064-acre grant from Lord Fairfax on 1 March 1768. He stated that the tract was "surveyed for my own use by Mr. George Washington and Plot returned in my Name 26 November 1750". • David Lewis, Jr. and his wife Tabltha sold 145 acres of the 400-acre tract (Tract 188) on 1 August 1768 to John Briscoe for 100 pounds, and the remaining 225 acres on 12 December 1782 to their son David Lewis for 99 pounds, 10 shillings. Early Land Disposition in Frederick County, VA

• Dr. John Briscoe sold the 462-acre tract patented on 17 April 1760 to John Rees, on 10 March 1775. [Berkeley County West Virginia Deed Book 3, pg. 494]. [Source: Pioneers of Old Frederick County, Virginia, by Cecil O'Dell, pg. 153].

• Dr. John Briscoe and his wife Elizabeth sold his 400 acre tract "on branches of Opequon Creek", which he acquired on 1 March 1760 to Jacob Taylor for 500 pounds on 30 June 1760. [Source: Pioneers of Old Frederick County, Virginia, by Cecil O'Dell, pg. 149].

Information on John Briscoe

From "Pioneers of Old Frederick County, Virginia", by Cecil O'Dell, pg. 150:

Briscoe's will was written on 6 January 1785, leaving his wife Ann (first wife Elizabeth died after 1760) the 150 acres "where he lives". A minor son, Hezekiah (possibly the son of Ann) would receive 150 acres after Elizabeth's demise. He left 400 acres on Salt River being part of 1,000 acres called "Grapeville" to daughter Sarah Slaughter. "All lands in Kentucky to son Parmenus Briscoe, son John Briscoe, Elizabeth Baker and Fraicei Davis, son Hezekiah Briscoe." And to friends Robert Briscoe (son of Philip) and James Summerel, 600 acres for their lifetime and then it reverts to son Hezekiah. [Berkeley County West Virginia Will Book 2, pg. 13].

35. Dr. John Briscoe (Phillip Briscoe , Phillip Briscoe , John Briscoe , Leonard Briscoe , Richard , John , Robert , Robert , Christopher , Isold , Robert , Gordan , Allen , Robert ) was born in Mar 1716/1717 in St. Mary's County, MD. He died on 7 Dec 1788 in Jefferson County, VA.

John married (1) Elizabeth H. McMillan. Elizabeth was born in May 1730 in Prince William County, VA. She died on 5 Jul 1774.

They had the following children:

 54 M i John Briscoe was born about 1743.  

+ 55 M ii Parmenas Briscoe was born on 1 May 1749. He died in 1824.

John married (2) Ann Lamar on 27 Feb 1776. Ann was born on 28 Sep 1729. She died in 1812.
