   Service - Virginia, Va. No. 4748, No. S--27779
   Enlisted. 1775, Augusta County, Virginia. Served as a private under Captain Michael Bowser, or Bowyer, in Colonel Wood's Twelfth Virginia Regiment. Was in battles of Trenton, Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, siege of Amboy, and capture of Stony Point. Discharge, signed by Colonel Russell, at Stony Point, New York, in 1778, was placed in hands of Captain Jacob Lockheart to procure for him his back pay and land, but got neither, and the discharge was not returned. Pension applicaton made in Greenbrier County, June 23, 1818, aged 76. Pension cerficate issued. December 1, 1818.

   At a Court Held for Greenbrier County on the 23rd day of June 1818.
   On the 23rd day of June in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred & Eighteen personally appeared before the County Court of Greenbrier the same being a Court of Record John Neal Blair aged about Seventy Six years resident in the County of Greenbrier & State of Virginia who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the late Act of Congress entitled and act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and navel service of the United States in the Revolutionary War.
   That he the said John Neal Blair enlisted in the County of Augusta in the State of Virginia in a Rifle company commanded by Capt. Michael Bowyer of the 12th Virginia Regiment Commanded by Colo. Woods [sic: James Wood] in the year 1775 to serve two years but that under that enlistment he served three years
   That he continued to serve in the service of the United States untill the end of three years when he was discharged from Service at Stoney point [sic: Stony Point] in the State of New York in the year 1778.
   That he was at the Battles of Trenton [26 Dec 1776] Brandywine [11 Sep 1777] Germantown [4 Oct 1777], Monmouth [28 Jun 1778], Siege of Amboy [possibly Battle at Amboy, 8 Mar 1777] and the takeing of Stoney point [16 Jul 1779]. And that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his Country for support
   That his discharge which was signed by Colo. Russle [sic: William Russell] was placed by him in the hands of Capt. Jacob Lockheart [Jacob Lockhart] to procure for him his land and back pay but he never got back either the discharge from Lockheart or anything else
   NOTE: A document dated 27 June 1820 states that Blair had been “for some time past in a deranged state of mind that he is not Capable of taking care of himself that he is not possessed of any visible property or any property in trust for him,” and that others had been appointed to draw his pension.
