John Raymond Apel was born 13 March 1900 to Heinrich Apel and Josephine (Clos) Apel. He wanted to be an artist and had a talent for it, but his father told him that because there were so many artists in the family already he had to do something else. He worked at an auto company and in the office of a streetcar company, and married Rose Marie Ullei on 14 April 1934. John and Rose had one daughter, who is married to a man who has children by a previous marriage. John is the only one of my grandmother's siblings that I (Alan Zundel) remember meeting. He was a pleasant man and always carried hard candy in his pocket, which he would share with us kids when we saw him. John died on 14 Nov. 1984 in Detroit.
