Eugene Theodore Apel was born 7 Sept. 1906 to Heinrich Apel and Josephine (Clos) Apel in Detroit, Michigan. He was said to have been "not quite right" since having diptheria as a child, but actually had Downs' syndrome. Eugene was an active and well-liked young man, and acted as mascot for the high school football team. Eugene lived into his sixties and in later years was cared for by his sister Honora. He died 17 March 1970.
