Obit from Glidden Graphic.
John Jacob Best was born Sept. 12, 1840 in Germany. While a young man he emigrated to this country, arriving shortly after the close of the Civil War, and settled in Ohio. Later he moved to Quinicy, Illinois, where he married Miss Anna Bruenen on May 2, 1970, in which union he lived for over 57 years until July 26, 1927 when his wife died.
In 1875 Mr.Best with his family moved to Carroll county Iowa, at first settling in Sheridan and later Grant townships, thus he became one of the pioneer settlers of this section of the state.
In the year of 1904, Mr.Best with his wife, retired from their farm in Grant township, making Glidden their new home. He moved to his daughter's, Mrs Catherine Janssen of Lidderdale last fall to spend the winter with her. Failing health he was moved to the Carroll Hospital on Dec. 19th, just six months and one day after the death of his wife. Mr. Best reached the age of 87 years, 4 months and 16 days.
Beside his immediate family, the sons Cord, Fred and Gary, two daughters, Mrs Catherine Janssen of Lidderdale and Mrs Anna Wenck he is survived by 14 grandchildren, two brothers, Harman of Carroll and Fred of Nebraska, and one sister Mrs. Henry Heuton and a host of near relatives and friends.
