Obit from Glidden Graphic-Sept. 16, 1943
Funeral services for Fred J. Best, 65, who died Wednesday in a Council Bluffs hospital, were held Friday afternoon at 1:45 in Huffman funeral home at Carroll and at 2:30 in St. John's Lutheran church in Grant Twp. The pastor, Rev. Geo. J. Gundel was in charge of the services, and took for his text Deut. 34:5-7, and the thought "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." Mr Fred J. Best, son of Mr. John Best and Mrs Johanna Best, nee Brunnen, was born in Grant twp., on the 18th of March 1894. Mr. Best was united in marriage with Miss Louise Letze on the 27th of March, 1901. This union was blest with 3 children, Bernard,Agnes and John, all living. Mr and Mrs Best made their home on a farm northwest of Glidden, up to the time when they retired on the 1st of April, 1940, to reside in Glidden. About two weeks prior to his death, Mr Best became ill and was taken to a sanitorium in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where hopes for his recovery seemed bright. But despite the efforts of a specialist, it pleased the Lord to summon him out of this life on Wed. Sept. 8th, shortly before 3 o'clock in the afternoon. He reached the age of 65 years, 9 mos and 13 days. He leaves to mourn: his bereaved wife; his 3 children, Mr. Bernard Best of Glidden, Miss Agnes Best of Iowa City, and Mr John Best of Glidden, 9 grandchildren: 2 brothers, Mr Cord Best of Glidden and Gerrit Best of Lidderdale; one sister, Mrs Anna Wenck of Carroll. His parents, 2 sisters and 1 brother preceded him in death.
- Birth Year must be a typo. If he died in 1943, at age 65, he would have been born about 1878, which matches what I have for him from other information.
