According to the 1930 Federal Census, Jacob C. Best was an inmate in the Iowa Hospital for the Insane.

Jacob Best hangs himself in Clarinda. Mr Best had been in the asylm in Clarinda for over a year. The decessed was born Jan. 3, 1872 in Illinois. When but a small child his parents moved into this county, so that he practically lived his whole life here. His old parents, John, but who is 80 years old and his wife, and three brothers and three sisters survive him.
