THE SIMPSON FAMILY
The first reference we found to the Simpson family of Southwest Virginis, was the purchase, on March 18, 1758, when James Simpson bought land from Robert Breckenridge for 33 pounds, 242 acres of land on the south side of Buffalo Creek, opposite Long Berch, top of Whiskey Hill. (Augusta County Deed Book D, Book 8-6), and between June 8, 1757 and May 4, 1759 he served in a company of Rangers under Major Andrew Lewis. We are told by the Simpson family that the first Simpson came from Washington County, Pennnsylvania to Virginia. Other early Simpsons in the area, in the next generation, are possibly James' sons. They were apparently men of prominence and action, all serving in the Revolution or in the militia, and contributing to the development of the area.
