Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA
Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:
James Robinson acquired 800 acres of land on the South Fork of of the Roanoke River in 1746, (as listed in "Robinson vs. Robinson" in 1762), in the records below. Part of this land may in the following 400-acre acquisition:
- Page 255.--11th February, 1746-7. Robert McCay to James Robinson. £40; 400 acres on Linwell's Creek, whereon the said Robinson lives being lot No. 1, part of 7,009 acres, &c.; mouth of Linwell's Creek and North River. Teste: G. Jones, Peter Scholl, Thomas T. Milseph (Milsaps). Poved by all, 21st May, 1747.

- Page 196.--6th October, 1775. James Robinson, Jr., of Roane County, North Carolina, to David Robinson; James Robinson, Sr., in his lifetime was seized of 400 acres, part of Hite and Co.'s patent of 7,900 dated 26th March, 1739. on North River and Linville's Creek. Devised same to David, Isaac and Jonathan, his sons, now James Robinson, Jr., son and heir of James, Sr. Teste: John Fulton, Jr., John McNees. Samuel Johnston, John Thomas, John Gratton, Sr., John Gratton, Jr. (Note: this land was sold by James Robinson, Jr., son of this James Robinson).

Will Abstract:
9th April, 1751. James Robinson's will, yeoman--Wife, Mary, and her daughters; two youngest sons, Isaac and Jonathan (Isaac is the older); son James, son David, 200 acres on Shanando River where he now lives. Executors, wife Mary and son David. Teste: James Williams, John Miller, John McDonald. Proved, 28th May, 1751, by McDonald and Miller, and Mary qualifies executrix, with sureties John Bryan and John Dobikin.
Will of James Robinson (Robison), Augusta Co. VA, 1751 transcribed by John Robertson from the work of Alma Robertson Cobb (itself an amended version of the work of Edna Robertson Vacher). My copy of Edna Vacher's work had this will missing. This was compared with an additional copy, believed to be from the DAR application of Margaret Oliver Stevens (missing first six lines and all following witnesses signatures). Differences, including capitalization and
punctuation, from the latter are noted in brackets.
- BE IT REMEMBERED that the ninth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty one I James Robinson of Augusta County in the colony of Virginia yeoman being very sick and weak of body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given to God therefore calling to mind the mortallity of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to to die do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament that is to say principally [Principally] and first of all I give and recommend my Soul unto the hands of God that gave it and for my body I recommend it to the Earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion [Discretion] of my Executors. And as touching such worldly estate [Worldly Estate] wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form --
- Imprimis.[,] It is my will and I do order that in the first place all my just debts and funeral charges be paid and satisfied.
- Item:[.] I give and bequeath unto Mary my dearly beloved wife the use and benifits of the plantation [Plantation] which I now live on during her natural life or she continues my widow and [--] after her death [Death] or marriage to go unto my two younger sons [--] Isaac [Robison] and Jonathan [Johnathon] Robinson [Robison] unto them and their heirs and assigns [asigne] forever together with all my stock [Stock] and movables that is remaining after the debts and legacies [Legal] is paid during the time aforesaid [afores]. And after she alters the condition or when she died to have one third part of the stock and moveables at her disposal [disposeal] to give unto her daughter or who she pleases and the other two thirds parts to go until [unto] the two youngest boys aforementioned [afore mentioned] to them and their heirs and assigns [youngins] forever [for ever].
- Item: [--] I give and bequeath unto my son James Robinson [Robison] the sum of ten shillings current money of Virginia. [...]
- Item:[] I give and bequeath unto my son David Robinson two hundred acres or there abouts [thereabouts] of land on the south side of the River Shenandoah [Shanendo] where he now liveth.
- Item:[] I give and bequeath unto my youngest sons Isaac and Jonathan Robinson [Robison] the plantation where I now live upon after their mother's [Mothers] death or marriage to them their heirs and assigns [asignes] forever to be equally divided [Equally Divided] between them and my son Isaac to live on that part which I now live and help his younger brother to build a log house and clear twelve acres [of Land] on his part. - Item:[] I do hereby constitute make and ordain my loving wife Mary Robinson [Robison] and my son David Robinson [Robison] my only and sole Executors [Exucators] this my last Will and Testament and I do hereby utterly disallow revoke and disannull all and every other former testaments wills legacies [Leagalies] and Executors [Expenatures] by me in any ways before this time [true] named willed [wills] and bequeathed [Bequeathed] ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last [Last] Will and Testament.

- At a court held for Augusta County the 28th, 1751. This last will and Testament of James Robinson dec. was produced into court by Mary Robinson of the Exors therein mentioned and being proved by John McDonald and John Miller who also made oath the said James Williams signed the same as a witness, the said Mary who made oath according to law certificate for obtaining a probate thereof is granted in due form giving security on which John Bryan and John Dobekim her securities entered and acknowledged their bond according to law.

- AUGUST, 1762 (A). Robinson vs. Robinson.--David Robinson complains: In 1746 James Robinson, cousin of orator, now (1762) deceased, took up 800 acres on South Fork of Roanoke, intending the same for his two sons, John, the eldest, and Thomas. In 1756 John died intestate, leaving Elizabeth Robinson his only child and heir-at-law an infant about 8 years old.
- ORDER BOOK No. XXIV. - page 362 - Crockett vs. Robertson.--Spa, dated 28th May, 1768. Agreement between Samuel Robinson of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and Saml. Crockett, of Augusta, dated 24th October, 1767. Robinson sold tract of land to Crockett on South Branch of Roanoke adjoining William Robinson and James Robinson, deceased, on main road to New River, it appearing that the right to the land is in an orphan of John Robinson, deceased. Bill recites: That one James Robinson, deceased, then living in Pennsylvania, with a pretty numerous family, sent his eldest son John Robinson (now deceased) to Roanoke, who bought land on his father's account from George Robinson. James came with his family and divided his land between his children. John had a brother William, also Samuel. The title to the land was taken in John's name, and he never conveyed his dividend to Samuel. John died, leaving his daughter. Elizabeth, his only child. The family was broken up by the Indians and French, and Samuel moved to South side of Blue Ridge and became very poor, and sold his land to Samuel Crockett. Elizabeth was an infant, and prayer for conveyance. Jacob Brown and Ann, his wife, depose, 17th Feb., 1768, to above facts. Ann was daughter of James Robinson.
