Hello, It is good to write to someone who is trying to sort out the early Ramseys and Lyles. My mother is a direct descendent from Dr James Ramsey, son of William Ramsey. Dr James Ramsey married Jane Lyle 16 Feb 1786 in Rockbridge Co VA.

Dr James Ramsey was a soldier in the American Revolution. He enlisted for the duration in Capt. Andrew Wagoner's company of the 12th Virginia Regiment, later re-designated as the 4th and 8th regiments. For his services, he was awarded 300 acres of land in Kentucky near where Bowling Green now stands. He rode on horseback from his home near Lexington, VA to Kentucky to claim the land, remaining there long enough to sell the land, and returned to Virginia where he bought a 9000 acre estate on the Big Calfpasture River in Augusta County - a valley known as Marble Valley extending from Goshen on the South to Deerfield on the north, with Walker's Mountain on the west and North Mountain on the east. Here he built a handsome brick colonial home "Locust Grove", beginning its construction in 1801 and completing it in 1805. All of the materials used to build this house came from the place - timbers hewn and finished -- bricks made and burned in a kiln near the house --nails were hand wrought--walls beautifully paneled --every material made and finished on the estate.

The home is still occupied by direct Ramsey descendents.

Dr. James Ramsey served for twenty-two years ( 1784-1807) on the Board of Directors of Washington College, which was earlier known as "Liberty Hall" but is now known as Washington and Lee University. He was an alumnus of W&L.

W&L began as Augusta Academy in 1749, became Liberty Hall in 1776, and Liberty Hall Academy in 1782 when Virginia chartered it to grant degrees. It became Washington College when George Washington gave $50,000 endowment in 1796. Later after Civil war Robert E. Lee was president and name changed after his death to W&L.

I have other info on the Ramseys. But I would like to learn more about the Lyle family. I know that Dr James Ramsey served on the Board of Trustees at the same time as one of the Lyles. Dr James' father lived near the school and James and Jane probably lived there until the home was built. One of James's sisters, Frances, married Archibald Scott, a Presbyterian minister. Their son, James Scott, married Julia Lyle. I am trying to identify this Julia Lyle. I have her as the daughter of Robert Lyle who married Jane Ramsey.

Thanks for your help. I hope my info helps.
