Peery, James - entered service abt. 1777 in Augusta County, Virginia; died 3/11/1829 in Hickman County, Tennessee; never applied for Pension; married 12/9/1777 to Jane, Augusta County, Virginia; widow applied for Pension age 87 in Hickman County, Tennessee, 1836; Alexander Peery (no kinship given) gave power of attorney in 1853 there to agent to apply for pension due soldier's widow; all Pension Applications Rejected. F-R8132, R1903.

    James Peery, son of George Perie (Pirie) and Esther, was born about 1755 in Augusta County, Virginia. He married Jane (Janet) Gilmore, daughter of James Gilmore and Ann, on 8 Dec 1777. They had 6 children. James died 11 Mar 1829 in Hickman County, Tennessee and Jane died 17 Jan 1842. Their descendants have lived in Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Oklahoma, and other areas in the United States.

    Declaration to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress of July 4, 1836
    On this 6th day of May 1842 personally appeared before me John McGill an acting justice of the peace for the County of Hickman aforesaid Jane Peery a resident of the County of Hickman & State aforesaid aged about eighty seven years who being duly sworn, according to law doth on her oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made for the Officers and, soldiers of the Revolutionary war, by the act of Congress of July 4, 1836 that Declarant intermarried with James Peery in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia in the year 1777 on the 8th day of December, and that she continued to live with the said James Peery as his wife until 11 March 1829 when, the said James Peery departed this life in the County of Hickman and State of Tennessee leaving Declarant, his widow and relict[.] Declarant states that her said husband, after her intermarriage enlisted in the army of the United States, and served a tour of Four months under Captain James Tate and that he was at the battle of the Cowpens [Jan. 17, 1781] under Genl. Morgan and fought with the Riflemen that day1 and that after the Battle of the Cowpens he returned home and remained, a short time when, he was drafted for a Second Tour, and served under the command of Captain James Tate, that he was at the battle of Guilford Court House [March 15, 1781] , where Captain Tate was Killed, Declarant does not remember the names of the other Officers under whom the said James Peery served during the war of the Revolution nor the length of time which he served the Second Tour[.] Declarant also states that her said husband was at the taking of Cornwallis at York, but cannot state the Officers under whom he served, or the duration of the term of his service[.] she states that he belonged to the militia, to best of her recollection and belief[.] Declarant further states that the name of the said James Peery is not on the Pension Roll of any agency in any state, nor did he in his lifetime ever draw a Pension for his services, or make, an application for one before the present[.] Declarant is still a widow, and hereby relinquishes any claim whatever, to a pension or annuity except the present.

    This day personally appeared before me John McGill an acting Justice of the peace in and for said County William Peery aged seventy seven who being duly sworn according to law the truth to speak deposeth and saith that he was acquainted with James Peery who lived in Agusta County [Augusta County] in the State of Virginia at [the beginning of] [paper damage, text missing] battle of Guilford the lenth of time he served then I don’t recollect As I returned home sick from Seage [siege] of York I met him in Richman [Richmond?] going down to the Army at York, but the lenghth of time he served then I doant rember nor the officers he was under James Peery was married in Augusta County in the State of Virginia in the year Seventeen Hundred & Seventy Seven December the Eighth to Jain Gilmore and the[y] lived together as man and wife til his death which was the Eleventh day of March Eighteen Hundred and Twenty [?] [paper damaged, text missing]] .... the Revolution war and that he served during the war and that he served a tower[sic tour] of three months at one time Guarding a fort in Tigers Valley [Tygart Valley] but the Officers he was under he don’t recollect & that he served a tower against the Cherokees under Collone [Col.] Christian [William Christian] the other officers he don’t recollect the tower was five[?] months he also served a tower of I think four months under James Tate and that he was at the Battle of the Cowpens under General Morgen [Daniel Morgan] and he belonged to the Riflemen a short time after he returned home he was drafted and he
    went out with Captain James Tate [paper damaged, text missing] .... not been married since her husbands death to any other man and further this deponent sayeth not this
